SOKHUMI, Abkhazia - A heated parliamentary debate over cryptocurrency mining restrictions turned deadly on Thursday when gunfire erupted inside the Abkhaz parliament building, leaving one lawmaker dead and two others injured.
According to local media reports, lawmaker Vakhtang Golandzia succumbed to his wounds following the shooting incident. Another deputy, Kan Kvartchia, sustained an arm injury and was taken to hospital for treatment.
The violence broke out during discussions of proposed legislation to completely ban cryptocurrency mining in the region. The shooting suspect, identified as deputy Adgur Khazaria, fled the scene immediately after the incident. His whereabouts remain unknown.
The debate over cryptocurrency mining comes amid a severe energy crisis in Abkhazia. The region currently faces extensive power shortages, with residents receiving less than three hours of electricity during daytime hours under a strict rationing schedule.
The energy situation has been further complicated by Russia's recent suspension of financial aid and demands that Abkhazia purchase electricity at market rates. Earlier this week, Abkhazian authorities appealed to Moscow for free electricity supplies for the coming year.
Local law enforcement has launched an investigation into the shooting. Authorities have not yet released details about the specific circumstances that led to the violent confrontation between the lawmakers.
This incident highlights the growing tensions surrounding cryptocurrency mining regulation in regions grappling with energy infrastructure challenges and economic difficulties.
